Showing My Age

A buddy of mine forwarded this gag to me, which I absolutely love, because when I was growing up the Cylons were the coolest thing on TV... with the possible exception of the short-lived Planet of the Apes series or, well, The Dukes of Hazzard.

I was seven years old, all right? ;P

Yeah, I really am that old. And I’m still writing exactly that kind of wild, big idea action-adventure today. How about you? What shows were your inspirations?

You think you are old???

When I was seven years old Star Trek was still on prime time!

But no show inspired me to write SF. Books and magazines all the way: Galaxy, Analog, Clifford Simak, Fred Pohl, Larry Niven, Joe Haldeman...

Now that's what I call inspiration!

Joe

I was a big, 8 year old fan of Galactica. I liked Buck Rogers, too. (Mmmmm...Erin Grey.)

My biggest TV influence came from the Japanese animation sci-fi that leaped the pond back then. Starblazers and Robotech were my favorites. Gundam would have been there if it had made it over before the early 90's.

I'm both with you and against you on this one, Joe. Of course it was books that really fired my imagination and hooked me on the idea of writing myself, but you can't beat TV or film for flashy effects and melodrama. Sure, a lot of these shows were really cornball, too, but that's why it's great to be seven years old and watching this garbage!

RWC, I totally (unforgivably) forgot about Robotech and Starblazers. Derek Wildstar and the Gamalons were some of my best friends in junior high. Wow! I totally loved that stuff!!!

I still want to fire the Wave Motion Gun!

Too many eighties cartoons, I think. I recall running around the backyard pretending to be He-Man/She-Ra with my cousins. They were never very complicated storylines, they mainly involved wiffle bat swords and screaming "By the power of Greyskull!" at each other. %)

But I think I have to agree with Joe that it was books that fired my imagination more. Of course, now that I'm older, I can find influences and ideas to carefully file serial numbers off of almost everywhere.

(And gah, the original Battlestar Galatica is as old as I am.)
