A Small Victory

There are more important things happening in the free world on Election Day, but I was surprised and pleased this afternoon to receive a small check from Boys' Life, who ran an article of mine about a year and a half ago. They paid quite nicely for it, too. At a buck a word, I was happy to sign away a great many rights to the piece -- and now they've gone and mailed me a bonus. Bizarre! Fantastic! There was nothing in our contract that required them to do so, and believe me, this is a first in all of my short fiction and nonfiction sales. The letter was impersonal, but the check was not, ha ha. It makes me want to get them more material. Just gotta finish the book!

Kudos to you AND Boy's Life!! What a shock that such a thing is still done: an unsolicited check! Do you have time to briefly mention what your article was about? (I’m not apt to pick up a Boy’s Life anytime soon!)

Whoops! Yep, I should have said: It was a gorgeous four-page spread on building your own Backyard Miniature Golf Courses with step-by-step instructions and illustrations for three wild and woolly "holes" constructed out of bricks, cinder blocks, plywood, and chicken wire. No power tools required. Hours of good clean fun. ;)

If anyone has boys or nephews or whatever and needs a copy, let me know.

Love to see the photos... did you snag any or have some of your own to post?!

I took the pictures that they in turn used for the illustrations, but, whew, I'd have to dig 'em out of the computer. Don't hold your breath for that! ;)

But I'll try.
