This Book Made Me Want To Poke My Eyeballs Out
Some good news in the meantime. A lot goes into a book ahead of publication and one of the things that's beginning to happen is pre-press endorsements, which is especially fun and amazing. It's unspeakably good to hear other professionals say positive things about your work. Writing is a lonely business.
Alas, I'm a shameless tease. I still can't tell you what the book's about, but get a load of this...
[name censored], bestselling author of [censored] and the forthcoming major studio release [censored], read the work-in-progress and had this to say:
"I knew Jeff could write. I've been a fan ever since he unleashed the nano plague on the world, but this new book is exciting. It's a quantum leap in terms of storytelling. I love the concept unreservedly. Love the writing to the point of jealousy. This guy's so ridiculously talented he makes me want to poke my eyeballs out, so without hesitation I can promise a glowing blurb and my full support for [title censored]. It's going to be a phenomenon."
Wow!!! Ya gotta love the sentiment. But... really? That's what they're going to put on the cover???
"This book made me want to mutilate my face."
Nice. :)
Labels: Big New Thriller Novel, Jacket Blurbs, Pre-Press
Looking forward to the book. thanks for coming out to Sacramento last Saturday evening and supporting our libraries.
Anonymous! The secrecy stems from writing books based on crazy ideas. I'm always amazed when I meet writers and they say something like "What if Ishmael was a zombie? That's what my book is about." Because, hey, for all they know, I'm going to run home, write that book overnight and beat them to market.
The whole time I was writing PLAGUE YEAR, I lived in mortal dread that someone else would come out with an end-of-the-world novel in which the only safe places on Earth were above 10,000 feet, no matter whether their problem was nanotech or a virus or swarming hordes of hairless rabid gerbils.
The idea is the key. And this new book is even, uh, *higher* in concept than PLAGUE YEAR? Bwah ha ha ha. So I'll be skittish until it's wholly in the pipeline.
Probably more than you needed to know, yes? :)
